Massage on the beach

The beach and swimming are available too, but restaurants have taken over most of the best spots. It’s easy enough to set up a spot and order something while you enjoy the beach. At Kakaw in the port area, you can get a first-hand tour of the history of chocolate. Of course, you’ll also get plenty of samples and a chance to purchase more to take home.

Alcohol is checked in when you get back to the ship and returned to you the last night of your cruise. Its location right near Cozumel (the most visited cruise port stop in the area) means that Costa Maya can be added into an itinerary without having to go far out of the way. Chances are good that if you are headed on a cruise that travels the western Caribbean, you’ll make a stop in Costa Maya. We’ll be straight with you — for being on the coast, Costa Maya isn’t blessed with great beaches. And in Mahahual, many restaurants and businesses have essentially taken over the beach. So if you’re expecting wide swatches of white-sand beaches to enjoy… think again.

More Things to Do in Costa Maya Port Activities

Taxis are usually available, but leave enough time just in case you have to wait. Spend the day on the beach – there are several beach clubs along this stretch of promenade. You can take a $8 taxi ride (that’s per taxi for one or more people) to anywhere in Mahahual. Costa Maya was the first “manufactured” cruise port in the Caribbean, but the infrastructure didn’t last too long. In 2007, Hurricane Dean had a devastating impact in the area. We’ve mentioned Chacchoben, but Mayan ruins are common in this area.

Costa Maya Restaurants

Tickets for the Mayan Lost Kingdom can be purchased through the cruise line, the last-minute tour desk on the pier, or directly at the entrance of the park. Some of the activities are not suitable for guests with disabilities or special needs. I am more of a snorkeller but scuba diving is also a great option for your Costa Maya Mexico excursion.

Where to stay in Costa Maya Mahahual

Here you can take a dip, feel the buzz of the port, and have a great view of the cruise ships docked just off the coast. Costa Maya, located on the eastern coast of Mexico’s Caribbean coast, is a vibrant destination that offers many attractions and experiences for visitors. From ancient ruins to cultural shows and exciting activities, Costa Maya has something for everyone.

When visiting Mahahual Beach, it’s important to note that the northern area tends to be the busiest. While it may be crowded, it also boasts the most amenities, including beach clubs with swim-up bars and water activities like water slides and zip lines. If you prefer a more peaceful experience, head to the southern tip of the beach, where the water is shallow and perfect for swimming. The Maya Chan Beach Resort is a hidden gem 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Costa Maya.

After almost three years, I recently had the chance to return to Costa Maya. Costa Maya has always been one of my favorite cruise ports in the Western Caribbean. After you get a ride into Mahahual, you’ll find there is a “main drag” — a walkway that winds down alongside the beach. On one side you’ll have the beach and the other is filled with shops and restaurants. Just down the coast from the cruise pier is a large lighthouse that stands on the point at the beginning of Mahahual. While it takes only a couple of minutes to see, it’s a neat landmark on your way into town.

Combine that with a rocky shore, and it’s no surprise that a lighthouse makes an appearance. It’s by far the tallest landmark in the area and makes a great photo op as you can get a shot with the cruise ships in the background. In this hectic world we live in, we want our travel plans to be made easy. Having one place that is up to date on cruise ships will make trip planning and the experiences worth it.

(Bacalar and the ruins)  If you book through the cruise line, if anything goes wrong they will hold the boat for you. One thing that I really like about all of these options is that they a within walking distance of the cruise ship. Have you been to Costa Maya on a cruise or are you going to?

One of the standout features is the Temple of the Large Masks, which showcases intricately carved stone masks that depict Mayan deities. With its idyllic location and amenities, Yaya Beach is the perfect spot to escape the crowds and create lasting memories during your visit to Costa Maya. Adam's goal is to enhance your cruising adventures with practical tips and insightful advice, making each of your journeys unforgettable.

Also, the famous Bacalar Lagoon is an hour’s drive from the cruise port. For adventure enthusiasts, Mahahual Beach offers an array of shore excursions and day trips. The options for beach clubs and swimming spots in Costa Maya are endless. Costa Maya has it all if you’re looking to relax on white sand beaches, take a dip in crystal-clear waters, or enjoy a swim-up bar. So grab your beach chair, wear your swimsuit, and prepare for a day of fun and relaxation in paradise. The Maya Chan beach club is located approximately 4 miles away from the Costa Maya cruise port.

The Temples of Chacchoben is a fairly new restoration project that dates back to as early as 200 B.C. Although it was discovered in the mid 20th century, it wasn’t fully renovated until 1994. Additionally, it wasn’t available to the public until cruises started to dock at the Costa Maya, Mexico port in 2002.

If you want to work on your tan, this is the spot to do it, within a short walk of the cruise ships. Just know that it can get busy, so if you’re wanting quiet and relaxing… this isn’t it. As you exit the ship you’ll make your through the port area where there are lots of shops, restaurants, and things to see. One draw is a massive swimming pool where cruise guests can lounge and swim — complete with swim-up bars. It’s free to swim and hang out if you buy something from the nearby restaurants, making it a good option if you’re looking for an affordable way to spend the day. Simply walk into the port area, and you’ll run into the pool.

There are catamaran tours that will take you out and let you snorkel or scuba dive. Luckily, there is a beach stop after touring the Chacchoben ruins. Another really cool thing about Chacchoben is the wild monkeys in all of the trees.
